So there are different types of Ketamine, right?

What’s the Difference Between Ketamine and Esketamine (Spravato)?

If you’ve been exploring ketamine therapy for depression or other mental health conditions, you might have come across two different treatment options. The two treatment options you may have heard of are Ketamine and Esketamine (brand name Spravato). While they may sound similar, there are some important practical differences between the two, and understanding them can help you make the best decision for your mental health journey.

Let’s start with the basics: Both ketamine and esketamine are effective in treating depression in clinical studies, but there isn’t a clear consensus on which one works better. However, from a practical standpoint, there are a few key differences that are worth considering.

First, Esketamine (Spravato) is a Nasal spray administered in a clinical setting that is tightly regulated. Doctors must follow a very specific treatment protocol when administering esketamine, ensuring that it’s given in line with clinical evidence. This makes esketamine a more standardized treatment with very strict and clear guidelines. This type of ketamine is also referred to as S - ketamine

Ketamine or R-Ketamine is administered via an IV fluid or IM (intramuscular injection) in a clinical setting. This form of Ketamine is less regulated in its treatment protocol. It is approved in Clinical settings as well with more flexibility in practice and integration. If you’re considering ketamine therapy, it’s important to do your research on the clinic for this reason.

This same type of ketamine can also be administered through a medical lozenge at home. However, there is a need for a support team to integrate and provide the proper support. We will be discussing this further in a later blog post as well.

Questions like: What doses are they offering? Do they have a team on staff that will be supportive to your healing? Is the treatment done in the clinic or at home? These factors can greatly affect the quality of care.

At our clinic, we take pride in offering a safe, professional, and caring environment for Ketamine or R-ketamine treatments. If you’re curious about Ketamine treatments we’re here to guide you in making the best decision for your mental health.
